Trump Announces US Naval Plan to Guide Ships Through Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions

Donald Trump has announced that the United States will begin guiding stranded commercial vessels through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, in a move that could significantly impact ongoing tensions in the Middle East. In a statement posted on social media, Trump described the operation named “Project Freedom” as a humanitarian effort aimed at ensuring safe passage for ships stuck in the region since the outbreak of conflict with Iran earlier this year. He said the US would assist vessels belonging to unspecified countries, emphasizing that the move was intended “for the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States.”

Trump also issued a strong warning, stating that any interference with the operation would be dealt with “forcefully,” signaling the potential for further escalation in an already fragile situation. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, has seen severely restricted traffic since hostilities began in February. Iran has limited access through the narrow waterway, while the United States has enforced a naval blockade on Iranian ports. The disruption has left an estimated 20,000 sailors stranded aboard vessels in the Gulf, with growing concerns about dwindling supplies and deteriorating physical and mental conditions.

According to United States Central Command, the operation will involve approximately 15,000 personnel, multiple guided-missile destroyers, and more than 100 aircraft. The scale of the deployment highlights the importance Washington places on restoring maritime movement through the region. However, the announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Tehran. Senior Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi warned that any US interference would be considered a violation of the existing ceasefire. His comments reflect growing unease within Iran’s political and military leadership, particularly given his background as a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Despite the tension, Trump indicated that diplomatic efforts are ongoing, describing current discussions with Iran as “very positive” and suggesting they could lead to a broader agreement. However, he did not provide details on how coordination with Tehran would occur during the naval operation. The situation remains volatile, with security risks still high in the region. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tanker in the strait was struck by an “unknown projectile” late Sunday, though all crew members were confirmed safe. The incident underscores the continuing dangers faced by vessels navigating the area.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, bordered by Iran to the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates to the south. It is a crucial route for global energy supplies, with roughly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it. Disruptions in the strait have already led to sharp increases in global energy prices, raising concerns about wider economic consequences.

Trump’s announcement comes amid renewed diplomatic exchanges between Washington and Tehran. Iranian state-linked media reported that Iran has submitted a 14-point peace proposal to the United States, calling for a full cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of US forces from near its borders, and an end to the naval blockade. The proposal also reportedly includes a 30-day timeline for reaching a comprehensive agreement.

According to Iranian officials, the proposal was delivered via Pakistan and is currently under review. While the United States has not formally confirmed its response, Trump has publicly expressed skepticism, suggesting the proposal may not meet Washington’s expectations. Iranian authorities have also reiterated that there are currently no negotiations underway regarding their nuclear programme, a key issue in US-Iran relations. Tehran maintains that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes, despite international concerns over its uranium enrichment levels.

As tensions remain high, “Project Freedom” represents both a potential lifeline for stranded vessels and a significant geopolitical risk. The success or failure of the operation could shape not only the immediate situation in the Gulf but also the broader trajectory of US-Iran relations in the weeks ahead.
