Deadly Russian Drone and Missile Attack Hits Ukraine, Dnipro Apartment Strike Kills Seven

Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine, leaving at least seven people dead and dozens injured in one of the most intense attacks in recent days. The strikes primarily targeted civilian areas, with the central city of Dnipro suffering the heaviest damage after a residential apartment building was hit, killing five people and trapping others under rubble.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as relentless, saying it lasted “practically all night.” Rescue teams continued operations into Saturday morning, searching through debris for survivors as emergency crews worked against time. Images released by Ukrainian authorities showed heavily damaged infrastructure, collapsed walls, and civilians evacuating amid chaos.

The assault involved a combination of Russian drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic weapons, signaling a continued escalation in aerial warfare tactics. Ukrainian officials reported that more than 600 drones were launched, making it one of the largest recent attacks. Air defense systems managed to intercept the majority, but several still struck key locations, causing significant destruction to residential buildings, energy facilities, and industrial sites.

In northern Ukraine, the city of Chernihiv also came under fire, where two people were killed. Additional strikes were reported in Odesa and Kharkiv, further highlighting the widespread nature of the offensive. Ukrainian officials emphasized that most targets were civilian infrastructure, raising concerns about ongoing humanitarian impacts.

Meanwhile, the conflict extended beyond Ukraine’s borders. In Russia, cities like Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk were reportedly hit by long-range Ukrainian drone strikes. Local authorities confirmed injuries and damage to buildings, while Russian air defenses claimed to have intercepted multiple drones targeting industrial facilities.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated it had shot down 127 Ukrainian drones across several regions and claimed control of Bochkove, a village in the Kharkiv region. However, Ukrainian officials have not confirmed this claim, and independent verification remains pending.

The escalation also triggered a NATO response. British fighter jets stationed in Romania were scrambled after drones were detected near NATO airspace. According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the jets did not engage any targets, as the drones were neutralized before entering Romanian territory. A NATO official confirmed that the aircraft had authority to act but did not need to intervene.

Romania’s defence ministry is currently investigating reports of an unidentified object falling within its borders during the attack, adding another layer of tension to an already volatile situation near NATO’s eastern flank. As diplomatic efforts remain stalled, Volodymyr Zelensky continues to push for stronger international partnerships. In a recent development, he met with Mohammed bin Salman to discuss enhanced air defence cooperation and joint military production. The meeting signals Ukraine’s growing outreach to Gulf nations, particularly as interest rises in Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities.

The latest wave of attacks underscores the ongoing intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides increasingly relying on long-range drone technology and aerial strikes. As civilian areas continue to bear the brunt, concerns are mounting over the humanitarian toll and the potential for further escalation in the region.
