Gen Z reclaims focus and balance through digital minimalism
US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from countries that maintain commercial ties with Iran, a move aimed at increasing economic pressure on Tehran amid ongoing nationwide protests. In a statement shared on social media, Trump said the tariff would take effect immediately and apply to “any and all business” conducted with the United States by countries that continue trading with Iran. However, no clarification was provided on what level or type of trade would qualify as “doing business” with Tehran.
The announcement comes as anti-government demonstrations in Iran enter their third week, sparked by a sharp decline in the value of the national currency, the rial, and rising inflation. Protests that began over economic grievances have expanded into a broader political crisis challenging Iran’s leadership. China remains Iran’s largest trading partner, followed by Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and India. The White House has not yet specified which countries or sectors are expected to be most affected by the new tariff.
US officials have also signaled that military options remain under consideration. Trump recently warned that the United States could intervene if Iranian authorities continue to use lethal force against protesters, stating that action may occur even before any formal negotiations. Human rights groups report hundreds of deaths since the unrest began, including both protesters and security personnel, with thousands more arrested. Verification has become increasingly difficult due to a widespread internet blackout inside Iran, limiting the flow of information.
Iran’s economy has been under significant strain due to long-standing international sanctions related to its nuclear program, as well as internal challenges including mismanagement and corruption. Inflation has surged above 40%, driving up the cost of essential goods such as food and fuel, and intensifying public anger. The newly announced tariff marks a sharp escalation in US economic pressure, adding uncertainty to global trade relations and further isolating Iran amid an already volatile situation.
