Italy Opens High-Speed Rail Linking Rome to Calabria, Cutting Travel Time by Hours

Rome — Italy has unveiled a new high-speed rail service connecting Rome with the southern coastal city of Reggio Calabria, cutting travel time by nearly three hours. The sleek Frecciarossa trains, operated by Trenitalia, will run daily, linking the Italian capital to Calabria’s coastal towns, long seen as under-served by public transport. Officials say the project aims to boost tourism in southern Italy while offering a sustainable alternative to domestic flights. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the launch as a “historic step in connecting North and South,” adding that it would make Calabria more accessible to international visitors.

Tourism operators in Calabria welcomed the news, predicting a surge in foreign travelers eager to explore beaches, villages, and the Aspromonte mountains. The launch comes as Italy sees a sharp rebound in tourism, with international arrivals up 18% compared to last year, according to the Italian National Tourist Board.
