HBO’s ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Premieres, Offering a Lighter Return to Westeros

HBO has expanded the Game of Thrones universe with the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new prequel series that debuted on January 18. Set roughly a century after the events depicted in House of the Dragon, the series presents a smaller-scale, more intimate story focused on the lives of the realm’s lesser-known figures. The show stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall, a young commoner raised as the squire to a hedge knight, Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Following Arlan’s death, Dunk sets out to make a name for himself, despite never having been formally knighted. His journey brings him to a tournament at Ashford Meadow, where he struggles to gain recognition among established knights and noble houses.

Along the way, Dunk encounters Egg, a sharp-witted boy from King’s Landing, played by Dexter Sol Ansell, who insists on becoming his squire. Their developing partnership forms the emotional core of the series, which blends humor, quiet optimism and grounded storytelling rather than the grand political intrigue that defined earlier Thrones installments. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, the first season adapts The Hedge Knight. The cast also includes Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, an early ancestor of Robert Baratheon, and Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossaway.

Season one consists of six episodes, each approximately 45 minutes long, released weekly on HBO and HBO Max. New episodes premiere every Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT, with the finale scheduled for February 22. Showrunner Ira Parker, previously a writer on House of the Dragon, has described the series as a different perspective on Westeros—one that centers on ordinary people living in the shadow of past dragons and fading magic.

With its quieter tone and character-driven narrative, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms marks a notable shift for the franchise while keeping viewers firmly rooted in the familiar world of Westeros.
