Russia, Ukraine and the United States will hold talks in Abu Dhabi on Friday in a new effort to find a path toward ending the war in Ukraine. Officials say this is the first time representatives from all three countries will meet together since Russia launched its full-scale invasion nearly four years ago. Russia said earlier talks with US officials were useful but stressed that a lasting peace deal cannot happen unless territorial issues are resolved. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has also said the future of eastern Ukrainian territory remains a major challenge.
Zelensky recently criticised European allies for not doing enough to pressure Russia and said Moscow must be willing to make compromises. He confirmed that senior Ukrainian officials will take part in the talks. The United States has said it supports diplomatic efforts and has discussed possible security guarantees for Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached. The Abu Dhabi meeting comes as fighting continues and key issues such as land control and long-term security remain unsettled.
